Development of Fluoride Toxicity including Cognitive Impairment with Reduced Iq: Pathophysiology, Interactions with Other Elements, and Predisposing and Protective Factors

چکیده
The development of toxicity to the fluoride ion (F) may be complex and multifactorial with a number of pathophysiological pathways being possible, with the potential for interactions between toxins involving additivity, synergism, and antagonism, and with a number of other factors having predisposing and protective effects. In addition to cognitive impairment with a reduced intelligence quotient (IQ) in children developing through other mechanisms such as disturbed thyroid hormone metabolism and sonic hedgehog signalling, other pathophysiological factors such as reduced brain glucose uptake following a fluoride-induced reduction in insulin secretion may contribute. Environmental contamination with cadmium in a coal combustion fluorosis-affected rural area within China's Three Gorges region may contribute to the dental and skeletal health problems in the population and the possibility of interactions between Cd and F affecting cognitive functioning requires further investigation. The propensity for the development of toxicity to F may involve interactions with a number of other factors as well as the levels of F exposure.

The ameliorative effects of sesamol against seizures, cognitive impairment and oxidative stress in the experimental model of epilepsy
Objective(s):A growing interest has recently been attracted towards the identification of plant-based medications including those with protective effects against cognitive impairment. Sesamol has shown promising antioxidant and neuroprotective effects, therefore, we aimed to evaluate its therapeutic potential in epilepsy which is commonly associated with oxidative stress and cognitive impairmen...

NEUROTOXIC EFFECTS OF FLUORIDE SUMMARY: This issue of Fluoride contains three new reports on fluoride (F) and neurotoxicity. A study of neurotoxic effects of F in aluminum potroom workers in Iran shows the importance of neurobehavioral testing for the early detection of cognitive impairment in workers occupationally exposed to airborne F. Two studies, from Iran and India, examined the IQ of chi...
متن کاملEndogenous and environmental factors interactions that contribute to the development of ascites in broiler chickens: a review
The increasing susceptibility of broiler chickens to ascites syndrome has coincided with a continuing genetic and nutritional improvement in their feed efficiency and growth rate. Ascites is multifactorial and interactions between environmental and endogenous factors play a particularly important role. The selection of fast growing broilers for high feed efficiency, which is characterized by hy...
